The 328 pages of Beatus of Liébana. Illuminated Manuscripts gather together all present-day knowledge of the oeuvre by Beatus of Liébana, the famous writer from Cantabria who lived in the 7th century in the monastery of San Martín de Turieno, or Santo Toribio de Liébana as it was subsequently called, in the Picos de Europa region, and whose writings overcame all frontiers of time and space. His Commentary on the Apocalypse, written in 776, was copied for more than five centuries and illuminated with awe-inspiring miniatures which became masterpieces of Hispanic art over the course of time. Professor Yarza, whose knowledge constitutes a guarantee for readers and even Beatus himself that is difficult to better, provides an in-depth analysis of 22 of the codices that have survived the vicissitudes of history and are now safeguarded like treasures in the finest libraries, museums and archives around the globe. In short, an exceptionally beautiful book whose lavish pages beckon to readers and whose main miniatures, most reproduced here for the first time ever, are a joy to behold.
