Gulbenkian Apocalypse

(Monografía)

Second edition of the Gulbenkian Apocalypse art book. Features an in-depth analysis of this medieval illuminated manuscript (13th century) by experts (….), commentary on every illumination in this apocalypse (299 images) and transcripts of its texts. Splendid cloth binding with French-style flyleaves.

“I seek not first-class books but veritable masterpieces” wrote the engineer, entrepreneur and philanthropist Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian (1869 - 1955) in a letter to Tommasso de Marinis in 1946.

“The Apocalypse with commentaries by Berengaud, made in England in c. 1265-1275, is undeniably one of the most outstanding works  in the Gulbenkian collection, not only because of the remarkably lively and dramatic miniatures that illustrate the Bible text, but also because it is one of a small group of three Apocalypse manuscripts illuminated in England in the late 13th century.”

Isabel Mota
President. Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation
