Lamentation over the body of Christ observed by Anne of Brittany at prayer
Using the diptych devotion formula, this double surface is charged with a concrete meaning of power. From an iconographic perspective, this scene of devotion evokes diptychs of Marian devotion. It depicts the moment when Christ, after being taken down from the cross with his five wounds and the cuts on his forehead clearly visible, is placed in the Virgin Mary´s lap. The second miniature depicts the Queen kneeling on a lavish damask or rich, deep-pile burgundy hassock alongside a kneeler. On the kneeler lies a book, possibly a book of hours. The Queen looks at the painting on the opposite folio showing Christ´s dead body lying on Our Lady´s lap.
