Anglo-Catalan Psalter

The most brilliant and lucid sample of the best painting of the 13th and 14th centuries.

The Anglo-Catalan Psalter is an exceptional work in every sense. The realization of its paintings took place in two phases, the first one in Canterbury, around 1180-1200. In the 13th century the unfinished codex was already on the Peninsula, where its paintings would be finished around the third quarter of the 14th century.

In his large-format paintings, the compartmentalised compositions stand out, made with a great variety and sumptuousness of colours, to which the gilded painting must be added.

For the history of the medieval art of the Hispanic kingdoms, the Anglo-Catalan Psalter is essential: firstly, because it might have been one of the most important means of diffusion for the penetration of the 1200 style in the art of the Peninsula; secondly, because it is one of the first testimonies - of the highest quality - of the Italian influence in the Hispanic kingdoms. This singular condition gives it an exclusive and unique character within the framework of art history.
