Flemish Apocalypse

f. 8r, The four angels holding the winds, the angel with the sign of the living God and the one hundred and forty-four thousand signed

Back

This miniature shows a multitude of scenes. The middle of the page is occupied by an image of the earth rendered as a round disk with land above and below, separated by a wide stream of water. The land above the water represents Asia and features various church buildings. The city of Jerusalem is easily recognizable with the three crosses on mount Calvary and is situated right in the centre of the miniature. Four angels, two above and two below the globe, prevent the four winds, symbolized by four heads, from blowing upon the earth. A wingless angel to the left, a little above the middle of the page, climbs onto the sun where a naked child is drawn. The angel clasps the cross, the sign of the living God, in his arms. God the Father and the Lamb are pictured in a mandorla. The four living creatures and eight of the twenty-four ancients surround the mandorla.
