Great Hours of Anne of Brittany

The Annunciation, f. 26v

Back

Maestro Bourdichon has painted Our Lady with exquisite and masterful refinement. Mary is shown reading the psalter in her Renaissance chapel, an indoor setting inspired by the oeuvre of Jean Pucelle, during the apparition of the archangel Gabriel to announce the good tidings to her. The Holy Ghost hovers in the centre of the composition in the form of a dove.
The figures in this manuscript were often represented in the foreground down to their knees. This endows them with a great visual impact that brings them closer to viewers, heightening their meditation upon the event portrayed in keeping with the text. The beauty and originality of the angel’s green wings are truly extraordinary.
