The Golf Book (Book of Hours)

f.28r, calendar, October

Back

The scene at the bottom of the border on f. 28r depicts an ox slaughter, which was a characteristic rather than a marginal scene in certain Flemish calendars.

On the right inside a medallion, with a golden phylactery where the word “libra” can be read, is the representation of the sign of the zodiac consisting of a pair of perfectly balanced scales alone. The mistake begun in September when Libra was located in October instead of Scorpion, continues here, as occurs in many manuscripts by Gerard Horenbout and Simon Bening.
