The Isabella Breviary

f. 252r, Parable of Dives and Lazarus

Back

A twenty-four line framed miniature over both columns of text of the Parable of Dives and Lazarus (Lk 16 vv 19-31), which is the Gospel for the day in the Dominican Missal. On the left and in the centre of the scene is the feast of the rich man, Dives, with his guests accompanied by servants and musicians playing trumpets. On the right at the bottom Dives is suffering in hell, whereas up in the sky Lazarus, the poor man, is in the bosom of Abraham in heaven. As a parallel to the musicians at the feast of Dives, Abraham and Lazarus in heaven are flanked by angel musicians. The Dives and Lazarus scene occurs rarely in books of hours as an illustration to the Office of the Dead, as in the Spinola Hours. There is a full border of the first category with gold acanthus scrolls, flowers, fruit and a peacock on a dark-grey ground.
