The Last Supper in the book of art: Book of Hours of Joanna I of Castile (start of the 16th Century)

Christ, acting in this painting as axis of the composition and the action, is depicted presiding over a round table around which the apostles are seated. Three of them can be clearly identified: St John, beardless and with long hair, resting his head on the Lord´s chest; Saint Peter, with tonsured, grey haired, looking at Jesus with his hands held open in surprise; and, finally, Judas, characterised by a large nose, speaking to another apostle and stretching his hand out to the bowl at the same time as the Lord. The bowl contains not fish or lamb, but round shapes that may be assimilated with the Body of Christ consecrated at the altar, in accordance, in this respect, with the image dated towards 1390 of the Passion Altarpiece, by Maestro Bertram (1367-1415)...
