The Hours of Joanna I of Castile

The Hours of Joanna I of Castile The Epiphany (f.101v.)
Back

The Epiphany (f.101v.)

The painting shows the Virgin sitting on upholstered cushions holding the Child by his back on her lap. The Child´s right hand makes a gesture of acceptance whilst his Mother´s right hand holds the gift presented by the oldest of the Magi kneeling with his hands joined to adore Jesus. He wears regal garb and, as a sign of respect, has his head uncovered like the rest of his companions. At his side, also on his knees, is another of the Magi, with long hair and a long beard, displaying a cup containing his offering. The last of them, the black wise man, is depicted removing his cap and holding a golden casket containing his present. Behind the Virgin, sheltered in the stable in ruins, are the ox and the ass.
