Val-Dieu Apocalypse

f. 23v · The Beast from the Land (the False Prophet) orders the killing of those who refuse to worship the Statue of the Beast from the Sea

Back

The Beast from the Land, seated on a mound and holding his staff of authority, tyrannises the people further by making them adore an image of the Beast from the Sea which stands on an altar covered with a white cloth and with a grey frontal hanging before it. He dramatically turns to order men to kill those who refuse to do this. On the left, two people who disobey him are about to be beheaded while others already killed are lying on the ground. The iconography very closely resembles the groupings and poses of people and beasts in the English Lambeth Apocalypse. The bright colours of the people and beasts contrasts with the dull-purple diaper ground.

And he seduced them that dwell on the earth for the signs which were given him to do in the sight of the beast, saying to them that dwell on the earth that they should make the image of the beast which had the wound by the sword and lived. And it was given to him to give life to the image of the beast, and that the image of the beast should speak, and should cause that whosoever will not adore the image of the beast should be slain. (Apoc. 13: 14-15)
