Val-Dieu Apocalypse

f. 41v · The Dragon chained and led to prison

Back

In this last picture depicting the victory of good over evil, it is now the turn of the final member of the three beasts who had tyrannised the earth, the great red Dragon, who is Satan to be chained and led to the bottomless pit. On the left an angel emerging from the clouds brings down a chain and the key to the bottomless pit; he then leads the dragon by the chain and puts the key into the lock of the entrance door to the pit where he will remain for a thousand years. Yet again the iconography is almost identical in poses and grouping, and details of the key, chain and lock, to that in the English Lambeth Apocalypse. The scene is set against a dull-green diaper ground.

“And I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon the old serpent, which is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. And he cast him into the bottomless pit and shut him up and set a seal upon him, that he should no more seduce the nations till the thousand years be finished, and after that he must be loosed a little time.” (Apoc. 20: 1-3)
