The Golf Book (Book of Hours)

f. 14v, Descent from the Cross

Back

The main image on f. 14v shows the Deposition: Joseph of Arimathea standing on a ladder holds Christ’s lifeless body by the chest whilst Nicodemus uses a pair of tongs to remove the nail from his feet. Behind them are the holy women, one of whom covers her face in her cloak, like Our Lady, bowing her head in sorrow, and St John the Baptist beside her. Lying on the ground is the skull attributed to Adam.
The scene in the bottom border depicts the lamentation over Christ’s body lying on the floor with his head resting upon Our Lady’s legs. She is at the foot of the cross with her arms open to indicate sorrow. St John, next to her, places his hand upon one of the mother of God’s arms to console her. One of the holy women kisses the Lord’s left hand, whilst another weeps behind her. Mary Magdalene, depicted from behind at his feet weeps too. Finally, Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus talk whilst pointing at the scene.
