The Isabella Breviary

The Isabella Breviary f. 5v, September

Back

f. 5v, September

Libra, a woman holding the scales; a man treading grapes, and other men pouring wine into and out of barrels in a vaulted chamber in a brick and stone building. There is a very similar scene for September in the Hours of Joanna of Castile and Philip the Handsome. The wine in barrels in the cellar for September is less often found as a labour for that month, and more often is used for October. For September, the picking of the grapes in the vineyard is more commonly depicted, often with a subsidiary scene of the treading of the grapes in the winepress.
