The Isabella Breviary

f. 90r, Jews threaten to stone Christ

Back

A twenty-four line framed miniature over both columns of text of the Jews threatening to stone Christ for blasphemy in Solomon“s porch at the Temple (Jn 8 vv. 46-59), which is the Gospel for the day in the Dominican Missal. In the foreground, beside the entrance porch of a building in which stand a group of Jews, two men clasping stones making threatening gestures toward Christ. In the far distance in the town Christ is performing a miracle of healing a kneeling man before a group of people. The illustration is of the final section of the Gospel for the day (vv. 57-9): “The Jews therefore said to him: Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? Jesus said to them: Amen, amen I say to you, before Abraham was made, I am. They took up stones therefore to cast at him. But Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple”. This scene is very rarely illustrated in art. There is a full border of the first category incorporating gold band interlace patterns and four medallions of musical angels with harp, triangle, viol, pipe and drum, all on a red-pink ground.
