f. 54v, The message to the Church of Smyrna

The dimensions are quite similar to those of the previous illustration with the difference that this one is situated at the top of the folio. Like the previous image upon whose layout this one is based, the surface is divided into bands of different, plain colours, sprinkled with countless, tiny circles. The framework is embellished with developed foliate motifs with the usual type of lamp hanging from the upper edge. St John is about to receive the book from the hands of the angel; both are shown from a three-quarters angle. The church of Zmirne is suggested by a slender building with a large horseshoe arch flanked by two towers each crowned by small arches of the same type. Positioned above the central arch is a cluster of horseshoe arches featuring one taller arch.
