Val-Dieu Apocalypse

f. 32v · Frogs come out of the Mouths of the False Prophet, the Beast and the Dragon

Back

John looks on, raising his hand in fear, as frogs, representing the unclean spirits of the devils which inspire their evil characters, come out of the mouths of the false prophet (the Beast from the Earth) seated holding his staff of authority in front of him, the Beast from the Sea and the red Dragon, standing behind on a mound. The iconography is very close to that in the Lambeth Apocalypse with the beasts in exactly the same poses in a landscape with trees and rabbits hiding in their holes. The scene is set against a purple-grey diaper ground, and a border bar links the ornamental initials of the texts below with a bird perched on the top foliate spray.

“And I saw from the mouth of the dragon and from the mouth of the beast and from the mouth of the false prophet three unclean spirits like frogs. For they are the spirits of devils working signs [...]”  (Apoc. 16: 13-14)
