Great Hours of Anne of Brittany

Saint Ursula and the eleven thousand virgins, f. 199v

Back

The daughter of an English king, Saint Ursula fled from Great Britain, which had been invaded by the Huns, and took refuge with a great many young Christians on the banks of the Rhine. The Huns hunted them down and savagely massacred them, as well portrayed by master Bourdichon in the Great Hours of Anne of Brittany, where the saint is shot to death and her companions, beheaded.
The painter reflects the mountainous bank of the Rhine quite accurately and endows the horse’s ornaments and the Hun’s garb including a large, blue hat with a certain exoticism.
Master Bourdichon discreetly reveals the identity of the patron of the magnificent codex he is painting by the coat of arms of Brittany on the prow of the ship that the saint has disembarked from.
