The Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry

Fol. 11v - November

Back

Jean Colombe

The chariot of the Sun passes from Scorpio to Sagittarius. Autumn is the season in which the swine are taken to feed on acorns. This hilly landscape includes woodland where the swineherds, with the nearby castle's livestock in their care, strike the branches of the oak and beech and send the nuts crashing to the ground. The dramatic pose of the swineherd in the foregournd (totally uncharacteristic of the work of Jean Colombe), with his raised stick, reminds one of the tormenters of St Mark (see fol. 19v), and the figure may indeed be inspired by a drawing by the Limbourgs. Under the watchful eye of a dog, we see the pigs with their corkscrew tails (portrayed with a note of humour).
