Great Hours of Anne of Brittany The Crucifixion, f. 47v

The Crucifixion, f. 47v

A bare-headed Mary Magdalene embraces the bleeding feet of Christ on the cross. Our Lady on the left and Saint John on the right mourn the death of Jesus.
The starry sky and the mountains in the background tinge the night scene with indigo, an effect Bourdichon was particularly fond of, as can be seen in other splendid night scenes in the Great Hours of Anne of Brittany.
A large group of soldiers returns to Jerusalem, the great city with a circular layout that can be glimpsed in the darkness in the background, where the Temple of Salomon with its centralised layout can be seen.
