Unter allen heute noch erhaltenen Apokalypsen ist dieses Manuskript der Französischen Nationalbibliothek aufgrund seiner Ikonographie einzigartig. Die Miniaturenmaler weisen ein außerordentliches Talent auf. Sie geben die gebräuchliche Illustration dieser Art von Texten wieder, führen aber neue, dieser Tradition völlig fremde, künstlerische Motive ein; jede einzelne Miniatur hat einen ganz eigenen, visionären Charakter und gibt eine mysteriöse Atmosphäre wieder, die in Einklang mit dem Inhalt steht.

Einige der besonderen Merkmale, die in den Miniaturen zu finden sind, machen aus diesem Kodex ein zuverlässiges Zeugnis der Denkweise Flanderns zu jener Zeit.

Sowohl wegen seines Inhalts als auch seiner Form verkörpert dieses Manuskript den Höhepunkt des realistischen, pre-Van Eyck Stils.
